Funeral

“Surely we belong to God, and surely we shall return to Him”

[Al-Baqarah: 156]

The Central Mosque of Lisbon has a funeral room fully equipped to host Islamic funeral rituals, in full compliance with the Sunnah and the principles of the Islamic faith. This space has been prepared with dignity and respect, providing the Muslim community with the necessary support in times of loss and farewell.

The room includes the following essential elements:

Washing area (Ghusl): Reserved and sanitized space for the ritual purification of the body, equipped with all necessary instruments, including marble tables, showers, assisted lifting system that facilitates the handling of bodies (similar to a crane) and disposable materials, ensuring the best conditions of cleanliness and respect.

Body preparation and wrapping area (Kafan): Quiet and properly prepared environment for placing the shroud (Kafan), using quality materials and fully respecting Islamic precepts.

Waiting room for family members: A comfortable area for family members and friends of the deceased, where they can remain in seclusion during the procedures, in a calm and respectful environment, with access to a large, covered atrium lit by natural light.

Salatul Janazah (funeral prayer): After the preparations, the Islamic funeral prayer is performed, a moment of supplication and spiritual farewell, led by one of the mosque's imams.

In several locations in Portugal, there are Islamic plots authorized for perpetual burial, respecting Islamic rituals. The mosque provides support in organizing and coordinating the entire process with the cemeteries.

This service is available to the entire community, with trained volunteers to ensure that all rituals are carried out with the utmost care, compassion and in accordance with Islamic jurisprudence.

For more information, interested parties should contact directly the funeral agencies with an established protocol with the Islamic Community of Lisbon, listed below:
